Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

197 – Shabābah ibn Sawwār Abū ʿAmr al-Fazārī
An imam, ḥāfiẓ, and authoritative proof; Abū ʿAmr al-Fazārī, the freedman allied to the Fazārah tribe, originally from al-Madāʾin.

Born: circa 130 AH.

He transmitted from: Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq, Ibn Abī Dhīb, Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān, Shuʿbah, Isrāʾīl, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Zabr, Warqāʾ, Sufyān, and others of their rank.

Reported from him: Aḥmad, Isḥāq, ʿAlī, Yaḥyā, Abū Khaythamah, al-Ḥasan al-Ḥulwānī, Aḥmad ibn al-Furāt, Muḥammad ibn ʿĀṣim al-Thaqafī, ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rūḥ, and many more.

He was counted among the leading imams, though he subscribed to the doctrine of the Murjiʾah.

Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī said: It was asked of Shabābah, “Is not faith both word and deed?”
He replied:

= Abu Dawud (no. 847), Book of Prayer, chapter “What to say when lifting one’s head from bowing”; and al-Nasa i, 2/198–199, Book of the Opening Takbir, chapter “What to say while standing,” both through several chains from Said ibn Abd al-Aziz with this same isnad. The wording includes: “wa la yanfaʿu dha al-jaddi minka al-jadd.” Al-Qurtubi remarks that the majority transmit the word *jadd* with an open *jim* in both instances, meaning good fortune or luck. The sense is: Whoever has been granted wealth, children, or worldly prestige will find that none of this benefits him before You—just as the Qur an states: “The Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart” (26:88-89).
