ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yaḥyā ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Hāshimī said, “I met three successive tiers of scholars, one of them being the tier of Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and I did not find anyone among them more reverently humble than Marwān ibn Muḥammad.” (1)
Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī said, “I have never seen a Syrian better than Marwān ibn Muḥammad.”
He was asked, “Not even his teacher, Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, nor Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah?”
He replied, “Not even his teacher—for he was in charge of the public treasury—nor Yaḥyā, for he held the judgeship.” (2)
Al-Bukhārī said, “He died in 210 AH.” (3)
I (the author) add: He lived sixty-three years and was an eminent, exemplary imam.
ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Fārisī, Hadiyya bint ʿAlī, and Ibn Qudāmah al-Ḥākim informed us, saying:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar related to us; ʿAbd al-Awwal ibn ʿĪsā related to us; Abū al-Ḥasan ibn Dāwūd related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Sarakh sī related to us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Samarkandī related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the ḥāfiẓ, related to us; he said: Marwān ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, saying: Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, from ʿAṭiyya ibn Qays, from Qazaʿah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from bowing, he would say:
“Our Lord, to You belongs all praise—filling the heavens and filling the earth—You are worthy of praise and glory. The most truthful statement a servant can utter, and all of us are Your servants. O Allah, none can withhold what You give, none can give what You withhold, and no possessor of fortune can benefit from his fortune against You.”
It was recorded by Muslim (4) through the chain of ʿAbd Allāh with a wording more complete than this.
