189 – Yahya ibn al-Durays ibn Yasar al-Bajali – (transmitted by Muslim and al-Tirmidhi)
The judge, imam, and ḥadith master; chief judge of Rayy; Abū Zakariyyāʾ al-Bajali, a client of the Bajila tribe, from Rayy.
He met Muḥammad ibn Abī Laylā.
Among those from whom he transmitted are Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Isḥāq, Zakariyyā ibn Isḥāq, Fudayl ibn Marzūq, Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, ʿAmr ibn Abī Qays al-Rāzī, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Zāʾidah ibn Qudāmah, and their peers.
He was an ocean of learning.
Those who narrated from him include Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Qazzāz, Abū Ghassān Zunayj, Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, Ibn Rāhawayh, Isḥāq ibn al-Fayḍ, Yaḥyā ibn Aktham, Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd, Mūsā ibn Naṣr, and many others.
One of his own teachers who later related from him was Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, and Jarīr marvelled at his outstanding memory.
Al-Nasāʾī said: “There is nothing objectionable about him.”
