the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—mentioned al-ʿAbbās and said, “He is my uncle and the counterpart of my father.” (1)
182 – Abu Bakr al-Hanafi ʿAbd al-Kabir ibn ʿAbd al-Majid * (ʿ)
He is ʿAbd al-Kabir ibn ʿAbd al-Majid al-Basri.
He narrated from Khuthaym ibn ʿIrak, Usamah ibn Zayd al-Laythi, ʿAbd al-Hamid ibn Jaʿfar, Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, Saʿid ibn Abi ʿArubah, al-Dahhak ibn ʿUthman, Aflah ibn Humayd, and a number of others.
He was counted among the leading authorities in hadith.
Those who transmitted from him include Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ishaq, Ibn al-Madini, Bundar, Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna, Ishaq al-Kawsaj, Muhammad ibn Yahya, al-Kudaymi, and many others.
Ahmad ibn Hanbal and others declared him trustworthy.
(1) Muhammad b. Yunus — al-Kudaymi al-Basri — was a hafiz but is counted among the discarded narrators; the rest of the chain is composed of trustworthy transmitters. Al-Tirmidhi also recorded the report (no. 3760) through Ahmad b. Ibrahim al-Dawraqi, who said: Shababa told us; Waraqa narrated from Abu l-Zinad, from al-Aʿraj, from Abu Hurayra, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Al-Abbas is the uncle of the Messenger of Allah, and a man’s uncle is the ṣinw of his father — or comes from the same root as his father.” Al-Tirmidhi graded it “hasan sahih,” and that assessment is sound.
The hadith appears in full in Musnad Ahmad 2/322 and in Sahih Muslim (no. 983) through the route of ʿAli b. Hafs — Waraqa — Abu l-Zinad — al-Aʿraj — Abu Hurayra, with the wording: “Do you not know that a man’s uncle is the ṣinw of his father?” It is likewise found in Sunan Abi Dawud (no. 1623) via al-Hasan b. al-Sabah — Shababa — Waraqa … A corroborating narration from ʿAli is in Ahmad 1/94 with an authentic chain. See also Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ 2/87. The term ṣinw means “counterpart” or “equal.”
