174 – Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-ʿAṭṭār, Abū Zakariyyā al-Anṣārī*
An imām, ḥadith scholar, and truthful narrator; Abū Zakariyyā al-Anṣārī, originally from Ḥimṣ.
He transmitted reports from: Yūnus ibn Yazīd, Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān, al-Masʿūdī, Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿIrq al-Yaḥṣubī, Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb al-Miṣrī, and Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif.
Among those who narrated from him are: Abū Hammām, Muḥammad ibn Muṣaffā, Abū al-Taqī al-Yazanī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥanān, and others.
Ibn Muṣaffā deemed him reliable, whereas Ibn Maʿīn and al-Dāraquṭnī graded him weak. Ibn Khuzaymah said, “He is not to be relied upon as proof.”
He is the author of the book Ḥifẓ al-Lisān (Guarding the Tongue).
= And hadith no. 5158 is also transmitted through several chains from al-Aʿmash, from al-Maʿrur ibn Suwayd, who related: “We passed by Abu Dharr at al-Rabadha while he was wearing a cloak, and his servant was dressed in an identical one. We said, ‘Abu Dharr, if you combined the two cloaks you would have a single outfit.’ He replied, ‘There was an exchange of words between me and one of my brethren; his mother was non-Arab, so I reproached him because of his mother. He complained about me to the Prophet ﷺ. When I met the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “O Abu Dharr, you are a man who still retains traits of jahiliyya (pre-Islamic ignorance). Your brothers are your servants; Allah has placed them under your authority. Whoever has his brother under his hand must feed him from what he eats himself and clothe him with what he wears himself. Do not burden them with what overpowers them; if you do burden them, then help them.”’
Abu Dawud adds in one version: ‘They are your brothers; Allah has granted you preference over them. If one of them does not suit you, sell him, and do not torment the creatures of Allah.’
Al-Bukhari recorded the hadith: 1/80–81 (Book of Faith, chapter: “Sins belonging to jahiliyya”) and 5/126 (Book of Manumission, chapter: “The Prophet’s saying: ‘Slaves are your brothers’”). Muslim recorded it under no. 1661 (40) through several chains from Shuʿba, from Wasil al-Ahdab, from al-Maʿrur ibn Suwayd. Al-Tirmidhi (no. 1945) also transmitted it via Muhammad ibn Bashshar, ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, Sufyan, and Wasil.
