Yaḥyā’s messenger then came to me, saying, “Our envoy was delayed only because I was pre-occupied.” So I mounted and went to him and told him the story of the purse. He said, “Boy, bring those dinars.” The servant brought ten thousand dinars, and he said, “Take two thousand for yourself, two thousand for the merchant, two thousand for the Hāshimī, and four thousand for your wife, for she has proved the most generous of you.” (1)
Al-Muʿaffā and al-Dāraqutnī transmitted this report from Ibn al-Anbārī, who said: “My father related it to us, and Abū ʿIkrimah related it to us.”
A similar account is also reported through another chain that reaches al-Wāqidī, but in that version he ordered five hundred dinars for him and two hundred dinars for each of the three; this appears closer to what actually happened.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Shādhān related from him: “I received six hundred thousand dirhams from the ruler, yet no zakat became due on any of it.” (2)
ʿAbbās al-Dūrī said: “Al-Wāqidī died while still serving as judge and had no shroud, so al-Maʾmūn sent the shrouds for him.” (3)
Al-Bukhārī said: “Al-Wāqidī died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 207 AH.” (4)
I read this before al-Muʾayyad ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyā the secretary; ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Najm informed us, and Fakhr al-Nisāʾ Shuhda informed us.
Al-Muʾayyad also informed us; ʿAlī ibn Bāsūyah the reciter informed us; Abū al-Saʿādāt al-Qazzāz informed us; both said, “Muḥammad informed us …”
