Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

what you are saying? The reliable Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān! (1)

Al-Athram transmitted from Aḥmad, who said, “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb was well-versed in the narrations of Saʿīd.” (2)

Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿfar said, “It has reached us that he used to act as Saʿīd’s mustamlī (assistant reciter), and he was the person who wept the most.” (3)

Abū Ḥātim said, “His hadith is fit to be recorded.” (4)

Abū Zurʿah said, “He is sounder than ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim.” (5)

He related two reports from Thawr that are not actually his.

I say: One of them concerns al-ʿAbbās—‘O Allah, grant him successors through his children’ (6)—and al-Tirmidhī judged it to be hasan.

He died toward the end of the year 204 AH.

Al-Maymūnī reported from Aḥmad that he said, “His hadith is weak and inconsistent.”

(6) Reported by al-Tirmidhi (no. 3762) in the Book of Virtues, chapter on the merits of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, through the isnad of Ibrahim ibn Saʿid al-Jawhari—ʿAbd al-Wahhab ibn ʿAtaʾ—Thawr ibn Yazid—Makhul—Kurayb (misprinted in some editions as Hudhayfa)—Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told al-Abbas: “When Monday morning comes, bring yourself and your children to me so that I may invoke a prayer for you by which Allah will benefit you and your offspring.” Al-Abbas complied, and we went with him. The Prophet wrapped us in a cloak and said: “O Allah, forgive al-Abbas and his children with an outward and inward forgiveness that leaves no sin. O Allah, preserve him through his progeny.” The author of al-Mizan comments: Salih Jazrah said that people faulted al-Khiffaf only for transmitting Thawr’s hadith on the virtues of al-Abbas; they raised no other criticism against him. Ibn Maʿin used to say, “This report is fabricated.” It is therefore possible that al-Khiffaf practiced tadlis here, as he merely used the vague term “ʿan” (from) in the chain.
