With this same chain, Ḥajjāj narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj. Ḥakīmah bint Umaymah related to me, from her mother — Umaymah bint Ruqayqah — that the Prophet ﷺ used to urinate into a small wooden cup, which would then be placed beneath his bed.
She said: It was once put there, and when he later came and looked for it, the cup was empty. So he asked a woman called Barakah, who used to serve Umm Ḥabībah and had accompanied her from Abyssinia, “Where is the urine that was in the cup?”
She replied, “I drank it, O Messenger of Allah.”
It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1) through Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, from Ḥajjāj.
170 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakr ibn Ḥabīb al-Sahmī al-Bāhilī (ʿ)
A ḥāfiẓ and authoritative proof, Abū Wahb al-Sahmī, al-Bāhilī, originally from Basra and later a resident of Baghdad.
He was born during the caliphate of Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik.
He heard ḥadith from: his father, Bakr ibn Ḥabīb, the scholar of Arabic; Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl; Ibn ʿAwn; Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah; Hishām ibn Ḥassān; Ḥātim ibn Abī Ṣaghīrah; Shuʿbah; and others of their generation.
= al-Muttalib ibn Abd Allah ibn Qays ibn Makhrama, on the authority of his father and then his grandfather; al-Tirmidhi declared the report hasan (sound). See: al-Bidaya, 2/261.
(1) Hadith no. 24 in the Book of Purification, chapter: Urinating in a vessel. Hakima bint Umayma is an unknown transmitter, yet Ibn Hibban (no. 141) and al-Hakim, 1/167, judged the hadith authentic, and al-Dhahabi concurred.
The phrase “min eidan” means “made from eidan.” According to al-Qamus, al-eidan (singular with a final h) are the long branches of the date-palm; from one of them a cup was fashioned in which the Prophet ﷺ would urinate.
