Abu ʿUbayd al-Ājurrī said: “I heard Abū Dāwūd mention a chain from Wahb ibn Jarīr, from his father, from Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Abū Wahb al-Jayshānī ….” Then Abū Dāwūd commented:
“Jarīr narrated this from Ibn Luḥayʿah. I looked for it in Egypt and could not find a single report of it with Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, while I did not miss a single one of Ibn Luḥayʿah’s ḥadiths; so I take it to have been a notebook that Wahb ibn Jarīr confused with something else.”
Ibn Saʿd said: “Wahb died in the year 206 AH.” (1)
ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd related from Ibn Maʿīn: “Wahb ibn Jarīr is reliable.” (2)
I say: In Abu Nuʿaym’s History of Iṣfahān there appears, in his own handwriting, a ḥadith attributed to Wahb, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ. I consider this a slip; most likely it is from ʿAbd Allah, the brother of ʿUbayd Allah, for Wahb could not have met the former.
A number of his high-isnād transmissions have reached us.
Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf and al-Faṭḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Salām also narrated, saying: “Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar the judge informed us.” (h)
Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allah likewise narrated to us; Abū Rūḥ al-Harawī informed us; Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb narrated to us; they said: “Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Naqqūr informed us; ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar al-Ḥarbī told us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ṣūfī related to us; Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn related to us; Wahb narrated, saying: ‘My father informed me: I heard Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah, from Bujayr ibn Abī Bujayr, who said: I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr say:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, when we set out with him toward al-Ṭāʾif and passed by a grave: ‘This is the grave of Abū Righāl, the ancestor of Thaqīf, and he was…’”’
