ʿĀsim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah related to me: When the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah from the campaign against Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy came to him and said, “Messenger of Allah, I have heard that you intend to kill my father. If you are going to do so, then order me to carry it out, and I will bring you his head myself. By Allah, the Khazraj know there is no man among them more dutiful to his father than I am. Yet I fear that you might command a Muslim to kill him, and I could not bear to see the slayer of ʿAbd Allāh walking the earth alive without killing him myself—so I would end up killing a believer for the sake of a disbeliever and enter the Fire.” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “No. Rather, we shall treat him well and deal gently with him as long as he is with us.” And Allah knows best.
The Incident of the Slander—and it took place during this expedition:
Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb said: Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us—from Maʿmar; and al-Nuʿmān ibn Rāshid—from al-Zuhrī—from ʿUrwah—from ʿĀʾishah—that whenever the Prophet ﷺ intended to travel, he would cast lots among his wives. She said, “He drew lots among us for the expedition of al-Muraysīʿ, and my name was chosen. On my account, those who were doomed met their doom.”
Ibn Isḥāq, al-Waqād, and others likewise stated that the story of the Slander occurred during the expedition of al-Muraysīʿ.
It is related from ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh that he said, “I asked, ‘Mother, tell me your story in the expedition of al-Muraysīʿ.’”
I read this before Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn ʿAbd al-Salām in Baalbek, and he said:
