the hypocrites’ (63:1). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent for me, recited the verse to me, and said, “Allah has declared you truthful, O Zayd.” Al-Bukhari recorded this.
Anas ibn Mālik said, “Zayd ibn Arqam is the man about whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘This is the one whose ear Allah has vindicated.’” Al-Bukhari also narrated it, through the chain of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Faḍl from Anas.
Al-Aʿmash related—from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir—that when the Prophet ﷺ returned from a journey and had nearly reached Madinah, a wind arose so fierce that it almost buried a mounted rider. He reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “This wind has been sent because of the death of a hypocrite.” When they entered Madinah, they found that a prominent hypocrite had died. Muslim recorded this.
Ibn Luhayʿah narrated—from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah—that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ halted on his way back from Oman, the people let their mounts rest, and a violent wind struck them so that they feared it. They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with this wind?” He replied, “Today a hypocrite of extreme hypocrisy has died; that is why the wind is raging. If Allah wills, it will do you no harm.” This occurred in the episode of the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq.
Yūnus narrated—from Ibn Isḥāq, from the elders who related the story of the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq—that they said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned back, and when he reached Buqʿāʾ in the Hijaz, short of al-Baqīʿ, a strong wind blew and the people became afraid. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not be afraid; it has blown because of the death of a great one among the greats of disbelief.” They discovered that Rafāʿah ibn Zayd ibn al-Tābūt had died that very day. He belonged to Banū Qaynuqāʿ, had outwardly professed Islam, and was a refuge for the hypocrites.
