Among those who narrated from him are Ishaq ibn Rahwayh, Bishr ibn Adam, Ishaq al-Kawsaj, al-Dhuhli, Nasr ibn ʿAli, Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Qutʿi, and others.
Ibn Saʿd declared him reliable and said: “He died in Basra in 207 AH.” (1)
Abu Hatim said: “Trustworthy.” (2)
It is also reported that he passed away on the last day of 206 AH.
Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulaym and Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, who both visited us in Damascus, informed us, saying:
“ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Makki informed us; my grandfather, the ḥāfiẓ Ahmad ibn Muhammad, informed us; Makki ibn ʿIllan informed us; Abu Bakr al-Hiri informed us; Abu ʿAli ibn Maʿqil informed us; Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli narrated to us; Bishr ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Malik narrated to us from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurayrah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If I had not feared that it would burden my community, I would have commanded them to use the siwak (tooth-stick) with every wudu.” (3)
Al-Nasa’i also recorded this narration from al-Dhuhli, and we have matched it with an even higher chain.
