ʿAbbād ibn Bishr to strike off his head.” He replied, “But what will people say if Muhammad kills his own Companions? No; instead, O ʿUmar, call out the order to break camp.”
When that reached ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy, he came to the Prophet ﷺ to offer excuses, swearing by Allah that he had never said such a thing. He still enjoyed a position of respect among his people, who said, “Messenger of Allah, perhaps the young man misunderstood.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then set out at an hour of day in which he was not accustomed to travel. Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr met him, greeted him with the greeting of prophethood, and said, “By Allah, you have set out at a most unusual time!” He replied, “Have you not heard what your companion Ibn Ubayy has said?” Usayd answered, “Messenger of Allah, by Allah, you are the one who is mighty and he is the one who is abased. Yet, Messenger of Allah, be gentle with him. By Allah, when Allah brought you to us we were even stringing beads to place a crown upon him, and he still imagines that you have snatched his kingdom from him.”
So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marched with the people for the rest of that day and its night until morning came and the heat grew intense. He then halted them for the remainder of that day and its night until morning came again and the heat intensified. He did this to divert their minds from the earlier incident, and the moment they touched the ground they all fell sound asleep. It was then that Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn was revealed.
Ibn ʿUyaynah reported: ʿAmr ibn Dīnār told us, “I heard Jābir say: We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a campaign when a man from the Muhājirūn kicked a man from the Anṣār. The Anṣārī cried, ‘O Anṣār!’ and the Muhājirī cried, ‘O Muhājirūn!’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘What is this call of the Age of Ignorance? Leave it, for it is repugnant.’ ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl said, ‘Have they really done that? By Allah, if we return to Madinah, the more honoured will surely expel the more abased from it.’ At that time the Anṣār were more numerous in Madinah than the Muhājirūn when the Prophet ﷺ first arrived, though the Muhājirūn later increased in number. ʿUmar said, ‘Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite,’ but the Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘Leave him, lest people say that Muhammad kills his own Companions.’” Agreed upon.
