Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

—al-Marwadhī, on the authority of Aḥmad.

Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said: “Aḥmad—may Allah have mercy on him—thought that Zayd had heard from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ in al-Andalus, for the latter was its judge. This, however, is a mistake. I am of the opinion that he heard from him in Mecca, for Ibn Mahdī and others heard from him there.” ⦗1⦘

Al-Khaṭīb also said in his book al-Sābiq ⦗2⦘:

“Those who transmitted from Zayd ibn Ḥubāb include ʿAbd Allah ibn Wahb and Yaḥyā ibn Abī Ṭālib, and the span between their deaths is seventy-eight years.”

It is related from ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb al-Ṭāʾī, who said: “We came to Zayd ibn Ḥubāb, but he did not possess a garment in which to come out to us, so he put the door between us and himself as a screen and narrated to us from behind it—may Allah have mercy on him.”

Muṭayyin and others said: “He died in the year 203 AH.”

(2) Full title: al-Sabiq wa-l-Lahiq fi Tabaʿud ma bayna Wafati al-Rawiyayn ʿan Shaykh Wahid (The Earlier and the Later: on the wide interval between the deaths of two transmitters who narrated from one teacher). In the introduction the author explains: “This book records cases where two narrators share a teacher but their dates of death are strikingly far apart; the later narrator died long after the earlier. I have called it al-Sabiq wa-l-Lahiq to show how the later ‘catches up’ with the earlier in narration even though he does not belong to his generation. The material is arranged alphabetically.” One manuscript is kept at the Egyptian National Library, 148 folios, catalogue no. 381 (Hadith Methodology section).
