124 – Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍubaʿī al-Baṣrī (ʿ)
An ascetic and ḥāfiẓ, Abū Muḥammad, a client of Banū ʿUjayf—his maternal uncles traced back to Banū Ḍubayʿah.
Birth: sometime after 120 AH.
He narrated from Shubayl ibn ʿAzrah, a companion of Anas, and used to say, “He lifted me onto his shoulder, and I heard Shubayl say….”
He also reported from Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd, Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah, Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah, Ḥumayd ibn al-Aswad, Hammām ibn Yaḥyā, Ṣāliḥ ibn Rustum, and many others.
Among those who transmitted from him were ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, Aḥmad, Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, Ibn Rāhawayh, Bundār, al-Dārimī, ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḍar al-Thaqafī, al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Abī al-ʿAwwām, Aḥmad ibn al-Furāt al-Rāzī, and a large number of others.
Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Buṣrī said, “I heard Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān say: ‘Saʿīd—’”
= Ibn Bashshar narrated to us, and so did Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and others; they said: “Harb ibn Shaddad narrated to us ….” The hadith scholar (al-hafiz) explains that the expression “and others” refers to Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi.
Abu Nuaym reproduces the report in his al-Mustakhraj through the chain of Abu Urubah: “Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and Abu Dawud narrated to us ….” This is the only place where al-Bukhari adduces Abu Dawud as corroborating evidence.
