Among them were Zaynab, Salamah, ʿUmar, and Durrah. Their father, Abū Salamah, was a foster-brother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for both he and Ḥamzah had been nursed by Thuwaybah, the freedwoman of Abū Lahab. It is said that Abū Salamah accepted Islam after the first ten converts, that he was the very first to emigrate to Abyssinia, and later the first to emigrate to Madinah. When he passed on to his Lord, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ closed his eyes and prayed for him. A wound he had received at the Battle of Uḥud reopened, and he died from it in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of year four. When her waiting period ended in Shawwāl, the Prophet ﷺ married Umm Salamah. She was counted among the most beautiful women and was the last of his wives to die.
A few days later he married his cousin on his aunt’s side, Zaynab bint Jaḥsh ibn Riʾāb al-Asadī. Her original name was Barra, but he changed it to Zaynab. She and her brothers were among the Emigrants, and their mother was Ummaymah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Concerning her the verse was revealed: “When Zayd had finished with her and dissolved their marriage, We married her to you” (Al-Aḥzāb 37). Zaynab used to boast to the other wives of the Prophet ﷺ, saying, “Your families arranged your marriages, whereas I was married from above the heavens.” The verse of veiling was also revealed about her. The Prophet ﷺ married her when she was thirty-five years old.
In that same year the Prophet ﷺ carried out the stoning punishment on a Jewish man and woman who had committed adultery.
During this year as well, Umm Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah died while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was away on a campaign accompanied by her son Saʿd. According to the report of Qatādah from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, the Prophet ﷺ prayed at her graveside several months later. Allah knows best.
