and had it been assigned to me from the kharāj (land-tax), I would have accepted it.
He added, “Perhaps he only declined it because he was not in debt, and he would say, ‘Charity is meant for these categories alone: the poor, the destitute, and those weighed down by debt.’
I asked him, ‘Then how could he take anything from the kharāj?’
He replied, ‘That was preferable to him; he would say, “It is not charity.”’ (1)

Abu ʿUbayd al-Ājurrī reported, on the authority of Abū Dāwūd: “Al-Khuraybī left four hundred dinars. Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād sent him one hundred dinars by the hand of Naṣr ibn ʿAlī, and he accepted them.” (2)

Muḥammad ibn Abī Muslim al-Kajjī narrated, from his father: “We went to ʿAbd Allah ibn Dāwūd so that he might relate hadith to us, but he said, ‘Get up and water the orchard.’ We heard nothing from him but that.

Ismāʿīl al-Khaṭībī said: I heard Abū Muslim al-Kajjī say,
‘I was writing down hadith while ʿAbd Allah ibn Dāwūd was still alive, yet I never sought him out. One day I was in my aunt’s house—she had sons older than I—and I did not see them, so I asked where they were.
They said, “They have gone to ʿAbd Allah ibn Dāwūd.” They were away a long while and then came back criticizing him. They said, “We looked for him in his house but did not find him; they told us, ‘He is in a little orchard of his nearby.’”
So we headed there and found him inside. We greeted him and asked him to narrate to us.
He said, “Would that I could benefit from you! I am occupied just now; this small orchard is mine—my livelihood—and it needs to be watered, and I have no one to water it.”
We said, “We will turn the water-wheel and irrigate it.”
He said, “If you can summon the right intention, then do so.”
So we stripped off our outer garments and turned the wheel until we had watered the orchard. Then we said to him, “Now narrate to us.”
He said, “May you be rewarded. I have no intention of narrating to you; as for you, you had an intention and will be rewarded for it.”’ (3)
