Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and others like them. Among those who narrated from him were ʿAlī ibn Sahl; Abū ʿUmayr ʿĪsā ibn Muḥammad—both from Ramla; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmmār; ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb; Saʿīd ibn Asad ibn Mūsā; and his son, Hārūn ibn Zayd.

Yahya ibn Maʿīn said, “There is nothing objectionable about him; he possessed Sufyān’s Jāmiʿ.”

Ibn Ḥibbān wrote in al-Thiqāt, “He relates isolated reports.”

Ibn ʿAmmār remarked, “In merit I have seen none like Zayd, al-Muʿāfā, and Qāsim al-Jarmī.”

Bishr al-Ḥāfī narrated from Zayd that he said, “I have not asked anyone for anything in fifty years.”

I heard him say, “If a man has dependents and fears for his religion, let him flee.”

I say: He may flee, but only on the condition that he does not neglect those he supports. Zayd ibn Abī al-Zarqāʾ did indeed flee and stayed in Ramla for several months. He was among the devoted worshippers and a close friend of al-Muʿāfā ibn ʿImrān.

It is reported that he went out on campaign, was captured by the enemy, and died in captivity in 197 AH. Others say he died in 194 AH, yet the first date is sounder.
