Aḥmad al-Bazzī said: “Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym died in the year 195 AH.”
- Salm ibn Qutaybah, Abū Qutaybah al-Khurasānī * (Kh, 4)
The imam, ḥadith scholar, and firmly reliable authority—Abū Qutaybah al-Khurasānī, al-Firyābī, al-Shaʿīrī (1)—who resided in Basra.
He transmitted ḥadith from ʿĪsā ibn Ṭahmān, Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq, ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār, Shuʿbah, and others of their generation.
Those who narrated from him include Zayd ibn Akhzam, ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī al-Fallas, Bundār, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhalī, Hārūn ibn Sulaymān al-Aṣbahānī, and many others.
Abū Dāwūd deemed him reliable, and al-Bukhārī relied on his transmissions.
(=) He is judged unreliable (munkar al-hadith) in the traditions he transmits from Ubayd Allah b. ʿUmar.
Al-Saji adds: “He made mistakes in the reports he related from Ubayd Allah b. ʿUmar.”
Yaʿqub b. Sufyan states: “He was a pious man and his written copy is unobjectionable. When he narrates from that notebook, his hadith is sound (hasan); when he narrates from memory, some of it is accepted and some rejected.”
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The two Shaykhs—al-Bukhari and Muslim—did not cite anything from his transmissions that go back to Ubayd Allah b. ʿUmar. In Sahih al-Bukhari he has only one hadith, transmitted through Ismaʿil b. Umayya → Saʿid al-Maqburi → Abu Hurayra → the Prophet ﷺ: “Allah, exalted is He, says: ‘There are three for whom I shall be an adversary…’.” Al-Bukhari, however, possesses another independent chain for that narration, and the remaining compilers considered his report acceptable.
