87 – Muḥammad ibn Thawr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh aṣ-Ṣanʿānī * (D, S)
The imam, the devout worshipper, the godly scholar, Abū ʿAbd Allāh aṣ-Ṣanʿānī.
He narrated from ʿAwf al-Aʿrābī, Ibn Jurayj, and Maʿmar ibn Rāshid.
Among those who narrated from him were Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād, Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd ibn Ḥisāb, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā aṣ-Ṣanʿānī, Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd al-Muḥāribī, and others.
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and other authorities declared him trustworthy. He fasted often, spent the nights in prayer, and stood in humble devotion to Allah.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim said: I asked my father about him, and he replied, “Excellence, worship, and truthfulness.” (1)
