Hanbal ibn Isḥāq transmitted from Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, who said:
“Abū Usāmah is reliable (thiqah). He was the most knowledgeable of people about the affairs of men and the reports of the people of Kūfah. How superb was his narration from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah!”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad related from his father that he said, “He was firmly reliable—how dependable he was! He scarcely ever erred.”
He also said: “My father was asked about Abū ʿĀṣim and Ibn Usāmah. He replied, ‘Abū Usāmah is more accurate than a hundred men the like of Abū ʿĀṣim. Abū Usāmah was precise, his written material was sound, he was sharp-witted and truthful.’”
ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd reported: “I asked Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn about Abū Usāmah and ʿAbdah, and he said, ‘Both of them are trustworthy.’”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Abān said: “I heard Abū Usāmah say, ‘With these two fingers of mine I have written one hundred thousand ḥadīths.’ Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmmār also heard this statement from him.”
Ibn al-Furāt remarked: “Abū Usāmah possessed six hundred ḥadīths from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah.”
Ibn ʿAmmār said: “In the days of Sufyān, Abū Usāmah was counted among the ascetics.”
Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī stated: “Dāwūd ibn Yaḥyā ibn Yamān narrated to us, from his father, from Sufyān, who said, ‘There is no young man in Kūfah more intelligent than Abū Usāmah.’”
Al-ʿIjlī further said: “He died in Shawwāl of the year 201 AH, and Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAlī al-ʿAbbāsī led the funeral prayer over him, pronouncing the takbīr four times.”
