Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

—also: “Weak.” He likewise said, “He used to fabricate.”

ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī was asked about him and declared him to be extremely weak.

Abū Zurʿah said: I heard Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā. He was asked, “Why do you not relate from ʿUmar ibn Hārūn?” He answered, “People have abandoned his ḥadith.” Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā himself said, “I wrote down a bundle of narrations from him, yet I do not transmit anything on his authority.”

Abū Isḥāq al-Jūzajānī said: “The scholars were not content with his narrations.”

Ṣāliḥ Jazrah and al-Nasāʾī both said: “His ḥadith is to be left.”

Zakariyyā al-Sājī said: “There is weakness in him.”

Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Abandoned.”

Al-Dāraquṭnī said: “Weak.”

Abū Nuʿaym said: “He is nothing; he reported objectionable material from Ibn Jurayj, al-Awzāʿī, and Shuʿbah.”

Abū ʿĪsā (al-Tirmidhī) said in his Jāmiʿ: I heard Muḥammad say, “His narrations are passable; I do not know of any report of his that lacks an established origin except this one.” Al-Tirmidhī transmitted it from Usāmah ibn Zayd, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather:

“The Prophet ﷺ used to take from his beard, trimming its sides and its length.” (1)

Al-Tirmidhī commented: “We do not know this report except through the ḥadith of ʿUmar, and I observed that Muḥammad held a favorable opinion of him.”

(1) Reported by al-Tirmidhi, Sunan, no. 2762, Book of Manners, chapter “On trimming the beard.” He commented: “This hadith is gharib—that is, weak.”
