Then Ibn ʿAdī said: al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Makhlad narrated to us; al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Maslamah narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from Ḥumayd, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever recites Yā Sīn every night, seeking Allah’s Face, will be forgiven.”
And through this very chain: “Allah created Paradise, planted its trees with His own hand, and said to it, ‘Speak.’ It replied, ‘The believers have indeed succeeded.’ (1)”
I say: Both of these reports are groundless; Ibn ʿĀṣim is free of them, whereas al-ʿAlāʾ is accused of lying (2).
Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb al-Nashāʾī related: ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us; Ḥumayd narrated to us—he heard Anas say: “Abū Ṭalḥah intended to divorce Umm Sulaym, so the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Divorcing Umm Sulaym would be a sin (ḥūb),’ and he refrained (3).”
This report is objectionable, even though al-Nashāʾī himself is trustworthy.
Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl ibn al-Faraj al-Ghāfiqī in Egypt narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd ibn Abān narrated to us; Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Zayyāt narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Khālid al-Khayyāṭ narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; he said: ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim informed me, from
Rather, he coined a number of lies and attributed them to Ali b. Asim—I have verified this—and among the most flagrant of them is … after which he quotes the hadith.
(1) Al-Kamil, fol. 593; the author also cites both reports in al-Mizan, 3/137.
(2) Al-Mizan confirms this judgment: “Both of these reports are false, and Ibn Adi did wrong by inserting such fabrications into the biography of Ali, while al-Ala is accused of mendacity.” In the biography of al-Ala it further states: Al-Azdi: “It is impermissible to relate from him; he did not care what he transmitted.” Ibn Tahir: “He used to fabricate hadith.” Ibn Hibban: “He reports forged material from trustworthy narrators.”
The hadith, “Whoever recites surah Ya-Sin (Yasin) seeking the Face of Allah will be forgiven,” is recorded by al-Bayhaqi and by Abu Nuaym, 2/159, through the route of al-Hasan al-Basri from Abu Hurayra; the chain is broken because al-Hasan never heard from Abu Hurayra. Abu Nuaym also narrates it, 4/130, from Ibn Masud in the wording: “Whoever recites Ya-Sin at night will awaken forgiven.” That chain contains Abu Maryam ʿAbd al-Ghafar b. al-Qasim, whom Abu Hatim, al-Nasaʾi and others declare “discarded” (matruk).
