Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah stated, “I heard Ibrāhīm ibn Hāshim say:
A man said to Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, ‘ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim has narrated—from Ibn Suqah, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿAbd Allāh—that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever offers condolences to the bereaved shall receive a reward equal to theirs.”’
Sufyān raised no objection to the report, but commented, ‘Muḥammad ibn Suqah did not accurately preserve anything from Ibrāhīm.’
Yaʿqūb then remarked, ‘This isnād is Kūfan and objectionable; the scholars hold that it has no foundation—neither as a marfūʿ report nor as a mawqūf statement. We know of no one who traced it back or stopped it except ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim.
It was also related by Abū Bakr al-Nahshalī—trustworthy, yet weak in ḥadith—on the authority of Muḥammad alone; he went no further in the chain but simply said, “He raises the report.” (1)
Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said, ‘Ibn Suqah’s report was likewise transmitted—exactly as ʿAlī narrated it—by ʿAbd al-Ḥakīm ibn Manṣūr, and it has also been ascribed to al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Isrāʾīl, Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl ibn ʿAṭiyyah, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mālik ibn Mighwal, and al-Ḥārith ibn ʿImrān al-Jaʿfarī, all from Ibn Suqah …’ until he concluded: ‘None of these transmissions is sound.’ (2)
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Qudāmah and others wrote to inform us; ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad informed us; Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ghaylān informed us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Mūsā ibn Sahl narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us; Sulaymān narrated from Abū ʿUthmān, from Hudhayfah—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
‘Some young men went out conversing and came across a herd of unattended camels. One of them remarked, “It seems their owners are not with them.”
A camel among them replied, “Their owners were gathered this morning.”’ (3)
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said, ‘I heard Shuʿbah say, “Do not take anything down from him”—meaning ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim.”
