Al-Fallas remarked, “ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim is weak, though—God willing—he was one of the truthful.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, “He is nothing.”
Al-Nasāʾī said, “Abandoned in ḥadith.”
Al-Bukhārī said, “In their estimation he is not strong; they speak critically of him.” (1)
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib—together with others—reported to us: Yaḥyā ibn Abī al-Suʿūd informed us; Tajannī al-Wahbāniyyah informed us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalḥah informed us; Ibn Razquwayh informed us; Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Suqah informed us, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever offers condolences to a bereaved person will receive a reward equal to his.” (2)
A similar wording has also been transmitted by Isrāʾīl and Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ on the authority of Ibn Suqah. (3)

(2) Reported by al-Tirmidhi (no. 1073) in the Book of Funerals, chapter “The reward for consoling a bereaved person,” and by Ibn Majah (no. 1602) in the same chapter. Al-Tirmidhi comments: “This is a gharib (i.e. weak) hadith; we know it in marfu‘ form only through the transmission of Ali b. Asim. Some transmitters relate it from Muhammad b. Suqah with the same chain as a mawquf report, without attributing it to the Prophet. The chief criticism levelled against Ali b. Asim concerns this very hadith.”
(3) Al-Khatib, Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 11, p. 451: Ibrahim b. Abd al-Wahid b. Muhammad b. al-Habab and Abd al-Ghafar b. Muhammad b. Ja‘far narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Shafi‘i related to us, saying: Muhammad b. Abd Allah b. Mihran al-Dinawari related to us, saying: Ibrahim b. Muslim—whom Ibn al-Habab called “al-Khuwarizmi” and Abd al-Ghafar called “al-Waki‘i”—reported, and they agreed on the wording: “I was present with Waki‘ while Ahmad b. Hanbal and Khalaf al-Mukharrami were with him. They mentioned Ali b. Asim. Khalaf said, ‘He erred in certain hadiths.’ Waki‘ asked, ‘Which ones?’ He replied, ‘The hadith of Muhammad b. Suqah, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Abd Allah, in which the Prophet said: “Whoever consoles a bereaved person shall have a reward equal to his.”’ Waki‘ responded, ‘Qays b. al-Rabi‘ narrated it to us from Muhammad b. Suqah, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Abd Allah.’ Waki‘ added, ‘And Isra’il b. Yunus narrated it to us from Muhammad b. Suqah, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Abd Allah, from the Prophet: “Whoever consoles a bereaved person shall have a reward equal to his.”’
