Ibn Isḥāq said: The campaign against Banū al-Naḍīr occurred in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 4 AH. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—besieged them for six nights, and it was during this expedition that the prohibition of wine was revealed. Allah knows best.
The Expedition against Banū Lihyān
Ibn Isḥāq said: In Jumādā al-Ūlā, six months after the pact with Banū Qurayẓah, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—set out toward Banū Lihyān to avenge the men of al-Rajīʿ, Khubayb and his companions. He outwardly announced that his destination was Syria so that he might catch the tribe unawares.
Yūnus transmitted from Ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥazm and others, who said: After Khubayb and his companions were slain, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—marched out to seek retribution for their blood, hoping to surprise Banū Lihyān. He followed the Syrian route and let people think he was not aiming at Banū Lihyān until he entered their territory—they belong to Hudhayl—only to find that they had been forewarned and had taken refuge on the mountain peaks. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said, “If we descend upon ʿUsfān, Quraysh will conclude that we have come to Mecca.”
He therefore advanced with two hundred mounted men until he encamped at ʿUsfān. There he dispatched two horsemen who rode on until they reached Kurāʿ al-Ghamīm, after which they returned to him. Abū ʿAyyāsh al-Zurqī reports that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—performed the Prayer of Fear at ʿUsfān.
Some specialists in the prophetic campaigns maintain that the expedition against Banū Lihyān occurred after the affair of Qurayẓah. Allah knows best.
