al-Khaṭīb; Masʿūd ibn Nāṣir narrated to me; he said: Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Muzakkī informed us; Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Marwānī informed us; I heard Zanjawayh al-Labbād say: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kathīr al-Bakrī say: I heard Aḥmad ibn Aʿyan at al-Maṣṣīṣah say: I heard ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim say,
“My father put one hundred thousand dirhams in my hand and said, ‘Go, and do not let me see your face again unless it is with one hundred thousand hadiths.’” (1)
By this same chain to al-Khaṭīb: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Faḍālah in Rayy informed us; Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar in Balkh informed us; Mūsā ibn Muḥammad the schoolmaster narrated to us; I heard Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥarb of Nīshāpūr say: I heard ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim declare,
“My father gave me one hundred thousand dirhams, so I brought him one hundred thousand hadiths. I used to seat Hushaym behind me on the mount so that he could listen with me, one report after another.” (2)
ʿAlī ibn Khushram said: Wakīʿ narrated to us:
“I came upon the scholars while the teaching circle in Wāsiṭ belonged to ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim.”
Someone said, “Abū Sufyān, he makes mistakes.”
He replied, “Leave him—and his mistakes.” (3)
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported: My father narrated to us; Wakīʿ—when ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim was mentioned—said,
“Take his hadiths when they are sound, and leave what is mistaken or erroneous.”
ʿAbd Allāh added: My father would use this as evidence and say, “He did slip and err, and he was obstinate, but he was never suspected of fabrication.” (4)
Abū Dāwūd said: Aḥmad—when ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim was mentioned—remarked,
“As for me, I took hadith from him, and narrations on his authority have reached us.”
