Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

you perform ablution, interlace the toes of your feet.” (1)

After that I saw him asked about the matter, and he would instruct people to interlace their toes. He said to me, “I had never heard this ḥadīth until now.”

We heard it in al-Khalīlī’s Irshād: my grandfather, ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar al-Faqīh, al-Qāsim ibn ʿAlqamah, Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān, and Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿĪsā narrated to me, saying, “Ibn Abī Ḥātim related it to us.”

64 – Muḥammad ibn Ḥimyar ibn Unays al-Qudaʿī * (Kh, S, Q)
A ḥadīth transmitter, scholar, and the shaykh of Ḥoms, Abū ʿAbd Allāh.
It is also said: Abū ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Qudaʿī, then al-Salīḥī.
Salīḥ is a sub-tribe of Qudaʿah.
He narrated from Muḥammad ibn Ziyād al-Alhānī, Thābit ibn ʿAjlān, Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubaydī, Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah, ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Sakūnī, and their peers.

(1) All the transmitters in this chain are trustworthy. There is some mild criticism of Ahmad ibn Akhi Ibn Wahb—i.e. Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman—but it is not severe. Al-Bayhaqi cites the hadith in his Sunan, 1/76-77, through the isnad of Ibn Abi Hatim, from Ahmad ibn Akhi Ibn Wahb, from his uncle Abd Allah, from al-Layth ibn Saad, Ibn Lahiʿa and Amr ibn al-Harith, from Yazid ibn Amr al-Maʿafiri, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Habali, from al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddad. Additional reports strengthen the narration: from Laqit ibn Sabirah, recorded by Abu Dawud (142, 143), Ahmad (4/33), al-Nasa’i (1/66) and Ibn Majah (407) with the wording, “Perfect the wudu (ablution), work the water between the fingers, and inhale water forcefully except when you are fasting.” Ibn Khuzaymah (150), Ibn Hibban (159) and al-Hakim (1/147-148) declared it sahih, and al-Dhahabi agreed; their judgement is sound. – From al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddad it is related by Ahmad (4/229), Abu Dawud (148), Ibn Majah (446) and al-Bayhaqi (1/76): “I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, rubbing the toes of his feet with his little finger when performing wudu,” and its chain is sahih. – From Ibn Abbas it appears in al-Tirmidhi (39) and Ibn Majah (447) in al-Tirmidhi’s wording: “When you perform wudu, pass water between the fingers of your hands and feet.” Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan, a judgement shared by al-Bukhari and others.
