a sheep, which they would slaughter and prepare, and its meat would be hung in one of the apartments of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
When Khubayb was martyred, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched that delegation, and among them was my uncle Ḥarām. As they passed by a clan of Banū Sulaym, Ḥarām said to their commander, “Let me go and inform these people that they are not the ones we seek, and they will leave us alone.” He went to them and delivered that message, but one of their men advanced on him with a spear and ran him through. The moment Ḥarām felt its point he exclaimed, “Allāhu Akbar! By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, I have triumphed!” They then fell upon the rest of the party until not one was left to bring news.
I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieve over anything as deeply as he grieved over them. Anas said: I used to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whenever he performed the dawn prayer, raise his hands and invoke curses upon them. Some time later Abū Ṭalḥah said to me, “Would you like to see the man who killed Ḥarām?” I replied, “What of him? May Allah do to him—and do again!” He said, “Do not say that; he has accepted Islam.”
Abū Usāmah said: Hishām narrated to us from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah was a servant of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṭufayl ibn Sakhbarah, my maternal half-brother. Abū Bakr had a milch ewe, and ʿĀmir would bring it home at night and take it out in the morning. At dawn he would set off under cover of darkness to reach them, then lead it away so that none of the other shepherds noticed. He continued escorting them until he entered Madinah with them.
ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah was killed on the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah, while ʿAmr ibn Umayyah was taken captive. ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl asked him, “Who is this?”—pointing to the slain man. He replied, “This is ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah.” He said, “I saw him, after he had been killed, raised up toward the sky, so that I could see the heavens between him and the earth.” He then related the rest of the story; al-Bukhārī recorded it.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān ibn Thābit recited the following verses, inciting the clan of Abū Barāʾ against ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl:
