and when Yahya saw him he said, “Come in.”

We entered, and he said to al-Rubi, “Recite.” When al-Rubi began to read, I noticed Yahya’s complexion change. When he reached the verse, “Indeed, the Day of Decision is the appointed time for them all” (al-Dukhan 44:40), Yahya was overwhelmed, lost consciousness, and cried out. A door was close to him; he toppled over so that the door struck the vertebrae of his back and blood flowed. The women screamed, and we went outside and waited at the entrance until he came to after some time. We then went back in to him and found him lying on his bed, still repeating, “Indeed, the Day of Decision is the appointed time for them all.” That wound remained until he died—may Allah have mercy on him.

Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Anbari relates from Zuhayr al-Babi who said: “I saw Yahya al-Qattan in a dream wearing a shirt, and between his shoulders was written: ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate. A letter from Allah, the Mighty, the All-Knowing: immunity for Yahya ibn Sa‘id al-Qattan from the Fire.’”

Abu Bakr ibn Khallad al-Bahili reports from Yahya al-Qattan, who said: “Whenever I made a mistake, Sufyan would say to me, ‘You have erred, O Yahya.’ One day he narrated from ‘Ubayd Allah, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whoever drinks from vessels of gold or silver is only gulping (1) into his stomach the fire of Hell.’ I said, ‘You have erred, O Abu ‘Abd Allah.’ He asked, ‘How should it be?’ I replied, ‘“‘Ubayd Allah narrated to us from Nafi‘, from Zayd ibn ‘Abd Allah, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from Umm Salamah, from the Prophet (2) ﷺ.”’ He said, ‘You are right, O Yahya; show it to me.’"
