52 – Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl ibn Ghazwān al-Ḍabbī, their freedman * (ʿ)
An imām, thoroughly reliable, and a ḥāfiẓ. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḍabbī, their freedman, was a Kufan who authored the Book of Supplication, the Book of Asceticism, the Book of Fasting, and other works.
He narrated from his father; Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal; ʿUmārah ibn al-Qaʿqāʿ; Bayān ibn Bishr; Ibrāhīm al-Hajarī; ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah; Ibn Abī Khālid; Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah; Layth ibn Abī Sulaym; Misʿar; Ḥabīb ibn Abī ʿAmrah; and many others.
Those who transmitted from him include Aḥmad, Abū ʿUbayd, Isḥāq, ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb, Aḥmad ibn Budayl, Aḥmad ibn Sinān al-Qaṭṭān, ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī, the sons of Abū Shaybah, Abū Kurayb, Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj, Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb, ʿAlī ibn al-Mundhir al-Ṭarīqī, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-ʿUṭāridī, and a large throng besides. Although he had a Shiʿi leaning, he was nonetheless counted among the scholars of hadith—perfection is rare indeed.
Yahya ibn Maʿin declared him reliable.
