— the Baghdadi who was then residing in Ramla — related to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥassān al-Azraq related to us; Wakiʿ related to us; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah related to us, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Vinegar is an excellent condiment.” (1)
49 – al-Jarrāḥ ibn Malīḥ ibn ʿAdī al-Ruʾāsī (Bukh., Mus., Abū Dāwūd, Tirm., Ibn Mājah)
Wakiʿ’s father held the office of the public treasury during the reign of Hārūn al-Rashīd and was also in charge of the mint in Rayy.
It is said that his ancestral home was in the outskirts of Rayy, in the small town of Ustuwā (2).
He narrated from Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, Abū Isḥāq, Simāk ibn Ḥarb, Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir, and others.
Among those who transmitted from him were his son, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī, Qabīṣah, Musaddad, Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī, ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah, and many more.
Ḥanash ibn Ḥarb narrates from Wakiʿ who said, “My father was born in Soghd (3), and Sharik was born in Bukhara.”
Ibn Saʿd said, “Al-Jarrāḥ ibn Malīḥ assumed charge of the public treasury in the city …”
(1) Its chain of transmission is sound. Muslim also recorded it (no. 2051) in the Book of Drinks, chapter “The Excellence of Vinegar and Using It as a Relish,” through the route of Abd Allah b. Abd al-Rahman al-Darimi, and al-Tirmidhi (no. 1841) in the Book of Foods, chapter “What Has Been Reported Concerning Vinegar,” through the route of Muhammad b. Sahl b. Askhar al-Baghdadi. Both go back to Yahya b. Hassan, from Sulayman b. Bilal with this same isnad. Muslim (no. 2052), Abu Dawud (no. 3820) and al-Tirmidhi (no. 1840) also transmitted it on the authority of Jabir b. Abd Allah.
