Ibn Maʿīn said, “I transcribed from him al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr.”
Ibrāhīm al-Harbī related: “I asked Imām Aḥmad, ‘Where did you get these finely detailed legal questions?’ He replied, ‘From the works of Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan.’ ”
It is reported that when Muḥammad was on his death-bed he was asked, “Do you weep despite all that knowledge?” He answered, “Just imagine if Allah were to stop me and say, ‘Muḥammad, what brought you to Rayy—striving in My cause or seeking My approval—what could I possibly say?’ ”
I add: He passed away—may Allah have mercy on him—in 189 AH, in Rayy.
