Muʿādh al-Harrāʾ for some time, after which he travelled on to al-Khalīl.
I (the author) say: al-Kisāʾī enjoyed great favor with Hārūn al-Rashīd; he tutored the Caliph’s son al-Amīn, acquired both status and wealth, and I have recorded his biography in several other places.
He accompanied al-Rashīd on campaign and died at Rayy, in the village of Aranbūya, in the year 189 AH, at the age of seventy. Various dates have been mentioned for his death, but this is the most reliable.
- Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Farqad, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shaybānī
The eminent scholar, the jurist of Iraq, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shaybānī, the Kufan, companion of Abū Ḥanīfah.
He was born in Wāsiṭ and raised in Kūfah. He learned part of his jurisprudence from Abū Ḥanīfah and completed his legal studies under the judge Abū Yūsuf.
He narrated from Abū Ḥanīfah, Misʿar, Mālik ibn Mighwal, al-Awzāʿī, and Mālik ibn Anas.
(=) He used to sit with them frequently. One day he said: “qad ʿayitu.” They objected, “You keep our company and yet make a grammatical mistake?” He asked, “Where is the mistake?” They replied, “If you mean physical fatigue, say aʿyitu; but if you mean that you have run out of ideas and are bewildered, say ʿayitu with a light ʿayn.” Ashamed by their remark, he got up immediately, inquired who could teach him grammar, and was directed to Muʿadh al-Harra. He stayed with him until he had absorbed everything the teacher knew. See Nuzhat al-albaʾ, 68; Inbah al-ruwah, 2/257-258.
