44 – Al-Kisāʾī, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh

The Imām and foremost authority in Qurʾanic recitation and the Arabic language: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bahman ibn Fayrūz al-Asadī, a client of the Banū Asad and a native of Kūfa. He was nicknamed “al-Kisāʾī” because he once entered the rites of pilgrimage wearing a cloak (kisāʾ).

He formally presented his recitation to Ibn Abī Laylā, and to Hamzah (1).

He also transmitted hadith from Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq, al-Aʿmash, Sulaymān ibn Arqam, and a group of others.

In addition, he studied the Qurʾan under ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar, the renowned reader.

Ibn Qays said: “I stayed with her for an entire year; each day she would come and go, bringing me everything I needed, yet she never once asked about my circumstances or my lineage. After a year had passed, I was leaning from an upper balcony overlooking the road when I suddenly heard an announcer of Abd al-Malik proclaiming that anyone sheltering me was henceforth free of all liability. I told the woman that I must depart. She replied: ‘Do not be disturbed by what you heard; that proclamation has been circulating ever since you came to us. If you wish to remain, you are more than welcome; if you prefer to leave, just let me know.’ I said, ‘I have no choice but to leave.’ That night she provided me with a mount, fully equipped with everything I could need for the journey. I asked her, ‘Who are you—may I be your ransom—so that I may repay you?’ She answered, ‘I did none of this expecting any recompense.’ So I left; and, by God, I never learned her identity except that I heard people call her by her name, Kathirah, and I later celebrated her in my poetry.
