the thirteenth of Dhu’l-Qaʿdah, 193 AH.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān al-Ḥāfiẓ related, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl:
“We were in Mecca in 193 AH when Rāshid al-Khaffāf arrived and told us, ‘We buried Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah on Thursday, with five—or six—days left of Dhu’l-Qaʿdah.’
“He then added, ‘We covered the journey in nine days,’ meaning that he had travelled from Baghdad to Mecca in that short span—an exceptionally rapid journey.”
Anyone who claims that he died in 194 AH is mistaken.

(1) Ibn Khallikan (3/129) states that the nisba is pronounced with a damma on the ʿayn and a fatha on the ta, followed by a qaf—al-ʿUtaqi. Those who bear it do not form a single tribe; some descend from Hajar of Himyar, others from Saʿd al-ʿAshira, still others from Kinana of Mudar, though most of them live in Egypt. This ʿAbd al-Rahman was the freedman (mawla) of Zubayd ibn al-Harith al-ʿUtaqi, who belonged to the Hajar branch of Himyar.
