I remark: he was merely referring to that slight slip of the tongue, and such a reproach cannot stand, for the scholars of the Ummah are unanimous in adducing evidence from Ismaʿil ibn Ibrahim, the upright and trustworthy.
ʿAbd al-Samad ibn Yazid Mardawayh said, “I heard Ismaʿil ibn ʿUlayyah declare, ‘The Qur’an is the speech of Allah, not created.’”
Between Ibn Tabarzad and Ibn ʿUlayyah there are only four transmitters in two well-known reports contained in al-Ghaylāniyyāt—an isnad of the highest elevation. The chain is: Ibn al-Husayn related to us; Abu Talib Muhammad ibn Muhammad informed us; Abu Bakr al-Shafiʿi narrated to us; Musa ibn Sahl narrated to us; Ismaʿil ibn ʿUlayyah narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar:
that the Prophet ﷺ forbade taking the Qur’an on a journey to enemy territory. (1)
This was conveyed to us in writing by Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Salam and a group, on the authority of what they heard from ʿUmar ibn Tabarzad.
I read the following before Abu al-Hasan ʿAli ibn Ahmad al-Gharrafi, who said: “Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qatiʿi informs you; Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd Allah told us; Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Hashimi told us; Abu Tahir al-Dhahabi told us; Yahya ibn Muhammad told us; al-Muʾammal ibn Hisham al-Yashkuri and Yaʿqub ibn Ibrahim told us, saying, ‘He narrated to us…’”
