Samīnah—Muʿāfā ibn ʿImrān narrated to us, from Ṣāliḥ ibn Abī al-Akhdar, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, who said:
“I used to pour the water for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform his ablution after he had visited all of his wives in a single night.”
This report has a fair chain of transmission.
Ibn Mājah also recorded it (1) through the narration of Wakīʿ, from Ṣāliḥ.
Muʿāfā—according to Salamah ibn Abī Nāfiʿ and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmmār—died in 185 AH.
Al-Haytham ibn Khārijah and Rabāḥ ibn al-Jarrāḥ, the shaykh of Ḥātim ibn al-Layth, said that he died in 186 AH, while ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn al-Khawwaṣ held that he passed away in 184 AH.
Among what Muʿāfā ibn ʿImrān transmitted is his report from Sufyān, from Ḥajjāj ibn Furāfiṣah, from Budayl, who said:
“Whoever comes to know Allah loves Him, and whoever perceives…"
(1) Hadith no. 589 appears in the section on ṭaharah (ritual purity), chapter: “What has been reported about a man who performs a single ghusl after visiting all his wives.”
The wording is: “I prepared water for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he bathed after having been with all his wives in one night.”
Salih ibn Abi al-Akhḍar is weak; Ibn Maʿin, al-Nasaʾi, al-Bukhari and others judged him unreliable, as noted in the author’s Mizān. Hence the isnad is weak and cannot be graded ḥasan. The report, however, is authentic through another route on the authority of Anas. Muslim relates it in his Sahih (no. 309), Book of ḥayḍ, chapter on the permissibility for a junub (sexually defiled person) to sleep and the recommendation that he perform wuḍu, through Shuʿbah, from Hisham ibn Zayd, from Anas: “The Prophet ﷺ would circulate among his wives with a single ghusl.”
Al-Nasaʾi (1/143) also transmits it through Ismaʿil ibn Ibrahim, from Humayd, from Anas; ʿAbd al-Razzaq (no. 1061)—and from him Ibn Khuzaymah (no. 230)—through Maʿmar, from Qatadah, from Anas; Ibn Majah (no. 588) through two chains from Sufyan, from Maʿmar, from Qatadah, from Anas; and Ibn Khuzaymah (no. 231) through Muʿadh ibn Hisham, from his father, from Qatadah, from Anas ibn Malik: “The Prophet ﷺ would go round his wives during one hour of the night or day with a single ghusl; they were eleven in number.” I asked Anas, “Could he really manage that?” He replied, “We used to say that he was given the strength of thirty men.”
Al-Bukhari (1/324), Book of ghusl, chapter: “When one has intercourse and returns again; and whoever goes round his wives with one ghusl,” also records the hadith, but without the phrase “with a single ghusl.”
