is trivial.”
The term jalal here means “insignificant”; in other contexts it may also carry the sense of “great.”
Abū Barzah reported that Julaibīb was one of the Anṣār. One day the Prophet ﷺ said to a man, “Marry me your daughter.” The man replied, “Yes—what an honor!” The Prophet ﷺ added, “I do not want her for myself.” The man asked, “Then for whom?” He answered, “For Julaibīb.” The man said, “Let me consult her mother first.” He went to his wife, who asked, “Is it for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said, “He wants your daughter for Julaibīb.” She exclaimed, “For Julaibīb? By Allah, no—I will not marry her to him!”
As her father rose to return to the Prophet ﷺ, the girl called out from behind her curtain, “Who has proposed to me?” They said, “The Messenger of Allah.” She said, “Will you turn down the Messenger of Allah’s wish? Hand me over to him, for he will not neglect me.” Her father therefore went back to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “She is at your disposal.” The Prophet ﷺ married her to Julaibīb and invoked blessings for them both.
Later, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a campaign, he asked, “Do you miss anyone?” They said, “We miss so-and-so and so-and-so.” He replied, “But I miss Julaibīb. Go and look for him.” They searched and found him beside seven enemy fighters he had killed, after which they had killed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He is of me and I am of him—he slew seven and they slew him.” They lifted him onto the Prophet’s forearms; a grave was dug for him, and he had no bier except the arms of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he placed him in the grave. Thābit al-Bunānī remarked, “Among the Anṣār there was no woman whose provision was more abundant than hers.”
Muslim recorded this narration through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thābit, from Kinānah ibn Nuʿaym, from Abū Barzah.
Al-Aʿmash related—through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Murrah, from Masrūq—that they asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd about the verse, “And never think of those who are killed in the cause of Allah as dead; rather, they are alive” (Āl ʿImrān 3:169). He said, “We once inquired about that, and it was explained to us that their souls are in the bodies of green birds that roam in Paradise wherever they wish, then return to lanterns suspended from the Throne.”
