Abū Jābir was one of the chiefs of the Anṣār. He fought at Badr and served as one of the twelve deputies on the Night of al-ʿAqabah. His full name was ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ḥarām ibn Kaʿb ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salamah. His mother was al-Rabab bint Qays of the Banū Salamah, and his son Jābir was with him at al-ʿAqabah.
Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd related—through his father, from his grandfather—that some food was brought to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf. He said, “Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr was killed—and he was better than I—and nothing could be found for his shroud except a single cloak. I fear that our good portion has been hastened for us in this worldly life.” Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.
Al-Aʿmash narrated from Abū Wāʾil, from Khabbāb, who said: “We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking the Face of Allah, and so our reward became incumbent upon Him. Some of us departed without tasting any of that reward; among them was Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr. He was martyred on the Day of Uḥud and possessed nothing but a coarse cloak. When we covered his head, his feet showed; and when we covered his feet, his head showed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Cover his head with it and place idhkhir (desert grass) over his feet.’ Others among us have had their fruit ripen and are now picking it.” Agreed upon.
Yūnus reported from Ibn Isḥāq: ʿAbd al-Waḥid ibn Abī ʿAwn told me, on the authority of Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, that a woman of the Anṣār from Banū Dīnār lost both her husband and her brother on the Day of Uḥud. When the news reached her she asked, “What has happened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” They replied, “He is safe, O mother of so-and-so.” She said, “Show him to me so that I may look at him.” They pointed him out to her, and when she saw him she exclaimed, “Every calamity after you…"
