Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

With this same chain, Shuʿbah narrated to us from Muḥārib ibn Dithār: I heard Ibn ʿUmar say that the Messenger of Allah said, “Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him.” (1)

Again through this chain, Shuʿbah narrated to us from Muslim ibn Yannāq:

“I saw Ibn ʿUmar in the house of Khālid. He noticed a man trailing his izār (waist-wrapper) and asked, ‘Who are you from?’

“The man replied, ‘From the Banū Layth.’

“Ibn ʿUmar said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah with these two ears of mine say: “Whoever drags his izār seeking nothing but haughtiness, Allah will not look at him.”’ (2)”

Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related—from Bashīr ibn Maymūn al-Shaqarī, from his uncle Usāmah ibn Akhdarī (may Allah be pleased with him)—that the Messenger of Allah said to a man, “What is your name?”

He answered, “Asram.”

The Prophet replied, “No, you are Zurʿah.”

This report is sound, singular, and counted among the unique narrations of Bishr. Abū Dāwūd recorded it. (3)

The authoritative ḥāfiẓ, Abū Sufyān, Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd al-Baṣrī,

(1) Its chain of transmission is sound. Al-Bukhari also recorded it (10/223, Book of Dress, chapter: “Whoever lets his garment trail out of arrogance”), as did Muslim (2085/43), al-Nasaʾi (8/206, Book of Adornment, chapter: “The severe warning against trailing the izar”), and Ahmad (2/42) through several routes, all from Shuʿbah with this same isnad. (2) Its chain is sound. Muslim included it in his Sahih (2085/45, Book of Dress and Adornment, chapter: “The prohibition of trailing the garment out of pride”), and Ahmad (2/45) recorded it through Shuʿbah with this chain. Malik transmitted it in the Muwattaʾ (2/914, Book of Dress, chapter: “What has been reported about a man letting his garment hang down”); from Malik it was taken by al-Bukhari (10/216, Book of Dress), Muslim (2085), and al-Tirmidhi (1730), all through Nafiʿ, ʿAbd Allah b. Dinar, and Zayd b. Aslam from Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Bukhari also cited it at 7/21 and 10/217, and Abu Dawud at 4085. (3) Hadith no. 4954 in the Book of Manners, chapter: “Changing an objectionable name.” Its chain is sound. The name Asram was disliked because it derives from sarm (severing); the Prophet replaced it with Zurʿa, from zarʿ (planting, vegetation), which is the opposite of severing.
