He was originally from Syria.
He narrated from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, Sulaymān al-Aʿmash, and ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān.
Those who transmitted from him include al-Walīd ibn Muslim, Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād, Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ, and others.
The scholars unanimously judged him weak.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “He is not reliable.”
Al-Bukhārī said, “His ḥadith are munkar (objectionable).”
Al-Nasāʾī and al-Dāraqutnī said, “He is to be abandoned in ḥadith.”
I (the author) say: Both of them are mentioned in al-Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl (1), and they were contemporaries; the second is cited only to tell them apart.
Ibn ʿAdī said, “Most of what he relates is not corroborated by the trustworthy narrators.”
I add: He alone transmits the following from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah:
“It was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what about a man who slaughters an animal and forgets to …’”}
