He died in the year 189 AH.
Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā al-Simsār said: Bishr al-Hāfī related, “I heard Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar say, ‘A time will come when the written copies of the Quran will be set aside, and people will run after hadith and speculative opinions. Beware of that, for it slaps the face, distracts the heart, and leads to excessive talk.’”
I have obtained a number of high-chain transmissions from Abū Khālid in the Mahāmiliyyāt (1) and elsewhere.
He was counted among the foremost hadith authorities, thoroughly opposed to speculative theology, personal opinion, and disputation.

(1) Al-Muhamiliyyat: a hadith collection in sixteen parts compiled by the scholar and hadith master Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ismaʿil ibn Muhammad al-Dabbi al-Baghdadi, known as al-Muhamili—a nickname taken from the mahamil (travel litters) used on journeys. He died in 330/941. The author of Kashf al-Zunun erroneously dated his death to 373/983.
تُوُفِّيَ: سَنَةَ تِسْعٍ وَثَمَانِيْنَ وَمائَةٍ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بنُ مُثَنَّى السِّمْسَار: قَالَ بِشْرٌ الحَافِي: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرَ يَقُوْلُ: يَأْتِي زَمَانٌ، تُعَطَّلُ فِيْهِ المَصَاحِفُ، يَطْلبُوْنَ الحَدِيْثَ وَالرَّأْيَ، فَإِيَّاكُم وَذَلِكَ، فَإِنَّهُ يُصَفِّقُ الوَجْهَ، وَيَشْغَلُ القَلْبَ، وَيُكْثِرُ الكَلاَمَ.
وَقَعَ لِي مِنْ عَوَالِي أَبِي خَالِدٍ فِي (المَحَامِلِيَّاتِ (١)) ، وَغَيْرِ ذَلِكَ.
وَكَانَ مِنْ أَئِمَّةِ الحَدِيْثِ، مُنَافِراً لِلْكَلاَمِ وَالرَّأْي وَالجِدَالِ.
