Abu Salih, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What an excellent man ʿAmr ibn al-Jamuh is.”
Muhammad ibn Muslim transmitted from ʿAmr ibn Dinar, and Fitr ibn Khalifah transmitted from Habib ibn Abi Thabit—as did others—that the Prophet ﷺ asked, “O Banu Salamah, who is your leader?” They replied, “Jadd ibn Qays, though we find him miserly.” He said, “What ailment is more ruinous than miserliness? Rather, your leader is the fair-haired, curly-headed ʿAmr ibn al-Jamuh.”
Al-Waqidi stated: He was not present at Badr. When he wished to set out for Uhud, his sons tried to stop him, saying, “Allah has excused you; you are lame.” He went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, whereupon the Prophet said, “As for you, Allah has indeed excused you.” Then he said to the sons, “Do not prevent him; perhaps Allah will grant him martyrdom.” He marched out and was martyred, along with his son Khallad.
Israʾil related from Saʿid ibn Masruq, from Abu al-Duha, that ʿAmr ibn al-Jamuh said to his sons, “You barred me from Paradise on the day of Badr; by Allah, if I remain alive I shall surely enter Paradise.” Thus, on the day of Uhud he stood in the foremost ranks.
Hammad ibn Zayd, on the authority of Ayyub, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, said: “We were summoned to deal with our slain from Uhud when Muʿawiyah channelled the spring. We went and exhumed them; their limbs were still pliant and fresh, even after forty years had passed.” Hammad added, “A companion of mine further told me that Hamzah’s foot was struck and blood gushed forth.”
Ibn ʿUyaynah, on the authority of al-Aswad, from Nabih al-ʿAnazi, from Jabir, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the martyrs of Uhud be returned to the very spots where they had fallen.
Abu ʿAwanah said: al-Aswad ibn Qays narrated to us, from Nabih al-ʿAnazi, from Jabir, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to fight the idolaters, and my father said to me…”
