your religion (1)."
He said, “Write it down for me.”
So I wrote it out for him and related it to him.
He went on, “I also narrated the hadith of Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd—the hadith of the necklace (2).”
He found it commendable and said:
The reference to “the verses with the Ten Words” concerns the commandments in the Torah and has no bearing on the evidentiary signs shown to Pharaoh. Explaining the Qurʼanic verse, he states: God informs us that He sent Moses with nine clear signs—conclusive proofs of his prophethood and of the truth of the message he conveyed to Pharaoh. These signs are: the staff, the white hand, the years of drought, the parting of the sea, the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood—each a distinct sign, as related by Ibn Abbas.
(1) Ahmad, Musnad 1/107; Abu Dawud 229 (Purification, “The junub who recites the Qurʼan”), both through Shuʿbah → ʿAmr b. Murrah → ʿAbd-Allah b. Salamah, who said: “I entered upon ʿAli—together with two men, one from us and, I think, one from Banu Asad. ʿAli sent them off in one direction and said, ‘You are two ʿaljan; grapple with your religion.’ He then went into the latrine, came out, asked for water, took a handful of it and wiped himself, after which he began to recite the Qurʼan. When they objected, he said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come out of the privy and recite the Qurʼan to us and eat meat with us, and nothing kept— or barred—him from the Qurʼan except major ritual impurity.’” Al-Hakim (4/107) declared the isnad sound and al-Dhahabi concurred. Abridged versions appear in Ahmad 1/83, 84, 124, 134; Nasaʼi 1/144; Tirmidhi 146; Ibn Majah 594. It was authenticated by Ibn Hibban (192), Ibn al-Sakan, and ʿAbd al-Haqq al-Ishbili. Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari 1/348: “Correctly classified as hasan and acceptable as evidence.” See also Sharh al-Sunnah 2/42.
(2) Abu Dawud 3352 (Sales, “Selling a sword-ornament for a dirham”); Ahmad 6/21; Tirmidhi 1255 (Sales, “Buying a necklace containing gold and beads”); Muslim 1591 (90) (Sharecropping, “Sale of a necklace”); Nasaʼi 7/279 (Sales, “Selling a necklace containing gold and beads for gold”)—all through Qutaybah b. Saʿid → al-Layth b. Saʿd → Abu Shujaʿ Saʿid b. Yazid → Khalid b. Abi ʿImran → Hanish al-Sanʿani → Fudala b. ʿUbayd, who said: “On the day of Khaybar I bought a necklace for twelve dinars; it contained gold and gems. When I dismantled it I found more than twelve dinars’ worth of gold. I mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, ‘Do not sell it until it has been separated.’”
Another route: Ahmad 6/19; Muslim 1591, through Abu Haniʾ b. Haniʾ al-Khawlani → ʿAli b. Rabah al-Lakhmi → Fudala b. ʿUbayd: “While the Prophet ﷺ was at Khaybar a necklace of beads and gold taken from the booty was offered for sale. He ordered the gold removed, and when it had been separated he said, ‘Gold for gold, weight for weight.’”
Also in Abu Dawud 3351 and Nasaʼi 7/279 via Saʿid b. Yazid → Khalid b. Abi ʿImran → Hanish → Fudala b. ʿUbayd.
