my sleep; beside him was an empty place, so I went to sit there, but he said, “This is Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī’s seat.”

Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Qarāfī reported to us; al-Mubārak ibn Abī al-Jūd reported to us; Aḥmad ibn Abī Ghālib, the devotee, reported to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAlī reported to us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhlis reported to us; Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to us; Zayd ibn Saʿd narrated to us; Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī narrated to us from al-Aʿmash, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Whoever brings joy to a believer has brought joy to me; whoever brings joy to me has taken with Allah a covenant; and whoever has taken with Allah a covenant, the Fire shall never touch him.’ ”

This ḥadith is all but fabricated, attractive though its chain may appear. As for this Zayd, I have found no mention of him in the biographical works on weak narrators, and the flaw lies with him.

Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī said: “I asked Abū Usāmah, ‘Which of the two ranks higher: Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ or Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī?’ He answered, ‘Fuḍayl was a man concerned with his own soul, whereas Abū Isḥāq was a man for the public.’ ”

ʿUbayd ibn Jannād related that ʿAṭāʾ ibn Muslim said: “I asked Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, ‘Will you not curse the man who struck you?’ He replied, ‘If I did, I should end up loving him.’ ”

When Abū Isḥāq died, ʿAṭāʾ declared, “No bereavement has ever befallen the ummah like the bereavement caused by the death of Abū Isḥāq.”

Ibn Mahdī said, “Al-Awzāʿī and al-Fazārī were both imams of the Sunnah.”

Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr transmitted from Abū Isḥāq that al-Awzāʿī, when asked about a man who is questioned, “Are you truly a believer?”, replied, “Putting that question is an innovation; testifying to it is an unwarranted probing that our religion has not charged us with, nor did our Prophet prescribe it. Speaking about it is mere argumentation, and disputing over it is a novel intrusion …” He then set forth a beneficial discussion on the matter.

النَّوْمِ، وَإِلَى جَنْبِهِ فُرْجَةٌ، فَذَهَبْتُ لأَجْلِسَ، فَقَالَ: هَذَا مَجْلِسُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الفَزَارِيِّ. أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو المَعَالِي أَحْمَدُ بنُ إِسْحَاقَ القَرَافِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا المُبَارَكُ بنُ أَبِي الجُوْدِ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بنُ أَبِي غَالِبٍ العَابِدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ العَزِيْزِ بنُ عَلِيٍّ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ المُخَلِّصُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بنُ هَارُوْنَ الحَضْرَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بنُ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الفَزَارِيُّ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ: (مَنْ أَدْخَلَ عَلَى مُؤْمِنٍ سُرُوْراً، فَقَدْ سَرَّنِي، وَمَنْ سَرَّنِي، فَقَدِ اتَّخَذَ عِنْدَ اللهِ عَهْداً، وَمَنِ اتَّخَذَ عِنْدَ اللهِ عَهْداً، فَلَنْ تَمَسَّهُ النَّارُ أَبَداً) . هَذَا حَدِيْثٌ شِبْهُ مَوْضُوْعٍ، مَعَ لَطَافَةِ إِسْنَادِهِ. وَزَيْدٌ هَذَا: لَمْ أَجِدْ لَهُ ذِكراً فِي دَوَاوِيْنِ الضُّعَفَاءِ، وَالآفَةُ مِنْهُ. إِبْرَاهِيْمُ بنُ سَعِيْدٍ الجَوْهَرِيُّ: قُلْتُ لأَبِي أُسَامَةَ: أَيُّهُمَا أَفْضَلُ: فُضَيْلُ بنُ عِيَاضٍ، أَوْ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الفَزَارِيُّ؟ فَقَالَ: كَانَ فُضَيْلٌ رَجُلَ نَفْسِهِ، وَكَانَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ رَجُلَ عَامَّةٍ. وَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ بنُ جَنَّادٍ: قَالَ عَطَاءُ بنُ مُسْلِمٍ: قُلْتُ لأَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الفَزَارِيِّ: أَلاَ تَسُبُّ مَنْ ضَرَبَكَ؟ قَالَ: إِذاً أُحِبُّهُ. فَلَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ عَطَاءٌ: مَا دَخَلَ عَلَى الأُمَّةِ مِنْ مَوْتِ أَحَدٍ، مَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِم مِنْ مَوْتِ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ. قَالَ ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ: كَانَ الأَوْزَاعِيُّ وَالفَزَارِيُّ إِمَامَينِ فِي السُّنَّةِ. وَرَوَى: مُعَاوِيَةُ بنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ الأَوْزَاعِيُّ فِي الرَّجُلِ يُسْأَلُ: أَمُؤْمِنٌ أَنْتَ حَقّاً؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ المَسْأَلَةَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ بِدْعَةٌ، وَالشَّهَادَةَ عَلَيْهِ تَعَمُّقٌ لَمْ نُكَلَّفْهُ فِي دِيْنِنَا، وَلَمْ يَشْرَعْه نَبِيُّنَا، القَوْلُ فِيْهِ جَدَلٌ، وَالمُنَازَعَةُ فِيْهِ حَدَثٌ ... ، وَذَكَرَ فَصْلاً نَافِعاً.
