Mushir narrated to us—Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ziyad, from Abu Rashid, who said:
Abu Umamah took me by the hand and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me by the hand and then said, ‘O Abu Umamah, among the believers are those for whom my heart becomes gentle.’” (1)
Abu al-Taqi al-Yazani remarked, “Whoever claims that Baqiyyah ever said ḥaddathanā (‘he narrated to us’) is lying; he only ever said: ḥaddathanī (‘he narrated to me’) so-and-so.”
Ibn Saʿd, Muṭayyin, and a group of scholars said that Baqiyyah died in 197 AH.
I (the author) add: In that same year passed away the ḥāfiẓ of Iraq, Wakīʿ; the ḥāfiẓ of Egypt, Ibn Wahb; Hisham ibn Yusuf, the judge of Yemen; Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb in al-Madāʾin; and ʿUthman ibn Saʿid Warsh, the Qur’an reciter of Egypt.
Baqiyyah lived for eighty-seven years—may Allah have mercy on him.
140 – al-ʿAbbās ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās al-ʿAbbāsī,
the emir, deputy governor of Syria, Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbāsī.
He governed Syria on behalf of his brother al-Manṣūr, and later administered al-Jazīrah for al-Rashīd. He led the pilgrimage several times and once campaigned against the Byzantines with sixty thousand men.
Shabāb said: “He entered Byzantine territory, dispatched his raiding parties, gained spoils, and was granted victory in the year 159 AH.”
