When the day of the Conquest of Mecca arrived, an unidentified man twice shouted, “No more Quraysh after today!” Allah then revealed to His Prophet ﷺ: “But if you retaliate, then retaliate only to the extent that you were wronged” (Q 16:126). The Prophet ﷺ therefore said, “Hold back from the people.”
Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, who said: On the day of Uḥud, Ṣafiyyah came carrying two pieces of cloth for Ḥamzah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw her, he disliked that she should behold Ḥamzah in the state he was in, so he sent al-Zubayr to detain her and took the two cloths. Beside Ḥamzah lay a slain man from the Anṣār, and they felt it improper to favour Ḥamzah with both shrouds. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Cast lots between them; whichever of them the better of the two cloths falls to, it is his.” They cast lots, and Ḥamzah was wrapped in one cloth and the Anṣārī in the other.
Yūnus also related—on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq—who said: Al-Zuhrī told me, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ṣaʿīr, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked upon the slain at Uḥud he declared, “I am a witness over these people. No one is wounded in the path of Allah but that he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection with his wound flowing with blood: its colour is the colour of blood, yet its scent is the scent of musk. Seek out the one among them who had gathered the most Qur’an and place him foremost over his companion in the grave.” They were therefore burying two or three together in a single grave.
Ibn Isḥāq said: My father related to me, from men of Banū Salamah, that when ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ and ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām were killed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Place the two of them together, for they were devoted friends in this world.” My father went on: Elders from the Anṣār told me that when Muʿāwiyah’s canal was cut through the area of the martyrs’ graves, we rushed to them, and water burst in upon the two of them in their grave. We exhumed them, and they were still covered with two cloaks that concealed their faces, and on their feet
