Muhannā ibn Yaḥyā reported: Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from Makḥūl, from Abū Hurayrah—traced back to the Prophet ﷺ:
“Those who hoard goods and those who kill people will be gathered to Hell in the same rank.” (1)
This narration is unique to Muhannā, and he is considered truthful, yet its isnād (chain of transmission) is interrupted.
Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd also said—Shurayk narrated, from Kulayb ibn Wāʾil, from Ibn ʿUmar, traced back to the Prophet ﷺ:
“Do not live alongside the Nabateans in their homeland, and do not marry into the Khuz, for their lineage inclines them toward disloyalty.”
This report is highly objectionable; Baqiyyah has omitted the intermediary from whom he heard it through Shurayk.
Al-ʿUqaylī said: Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd related to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥakam related to us, from Wakīʿ, who said, “I have never heard anyone bolder in saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said…’ than Baqiyyah.”
ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq stated in al-Aḥkām, in several places, “Baqiyyah is not to be relied upon,” yet he also transmitted some of Baqiyyah’s ḥadiths without remarking on their weakness.
The ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Qaṭṭān said, “Baqiyyah practices tadlīs (concealing weak narrators) and deems it permissible; if this is proven, it undermines his integrity.”
I say: Indeed, we are certain that he used to do this—as did his companion al-Walīd ibn Muslim and more than one other—but it is not assumed that they thereby accused their own teachers of fabrication.
