And among those who narrated from him were: Ibn al-Mubārak, Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghazwān—known as Qirād—, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā ibn Yamān ibn Maʿīn, Abū Khaythamah, ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah, Aḥmad ibn Ḥumayd al-Kūfī, Abū Kurayb, Abū Hammām al-Sakūnī, Yaʿqūb al-Dawraqī, many others, and his two sons Abū ʿUbaydah and ʿAbbād.
Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl ibn al-Naḍr said, “I heard al-Ashjaʿī say, ‘I received thirty thousand hadiths from Sufyān al-Thawrī.’”
Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī stated, “Al-Ashjaʿī and Yaḥyā ibn Ādam each possessed thirty thousand hadiths from Sufyān.”
Ibn Saʿd said, “Al-Ashjaʿī transmitted al-Thawrī’s books exactly as they were, and he also relayed his Jāmiʿ.”
Though a native of Kufa, he remained in Baghdad until his death.
Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān al-Ruhāwī reported: “I heard Qabīṣah say, ‘When Sufyān died, the people wanted al-Ashjaʿī to sit—that is, to occupy Sufyān’s place—yet he refused. Only after they spoke to Zāʾidah did he sit.’”
Abū Bakr al-Aʿyan said: “I asked Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal about Sufyān’s foremost students. He replied, ‘Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Wakīʿ, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and then al-Ashjaʿī.’”
Abū Dāwūd also related from Aḥmad: “Al-Ashjaʿī used to write down what he heard during the gathering; because of that, his hadiths are sound.”
ʿAbbās transmitted from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn who said, “No one among the transmitters of al-Thawrī’s hadiths resembles these men: Ibn al-Mubārak, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, Wakīʿ, Ibn Mahdī, and Abū Nuʿaym.” He was asked, “And al-Ashjaʿī?” He answered, “Al-Ashjaʿī is reliable and trustworthy, but show me someone who reports from him.”
